Ghosts, ghouls, spirits, and superstitions are an integral part of Indonesian society and history. Therefore, it is not coincidental that Indonesian horror films are one of the best-known exports of the Indonesian film history, starting with exploitation horror rooted in the New Order and its historical context, to contemporary Indonesian horror that has reached its way to midnight programs of festivals around the world. IFF is celebrating this legacy of Indonesian cinema through this event; we will take you on a tour of the legacy of Indonesian horror cinema through up-and-coming filmmakers – we present the basics of Indonesian spirituality through Kawakibi Muttaqien’s Cenayang, an ode to New Order-era exploitation movies through Azzam Fi Rullah’s Kesurupan Erotik, and new visions from the diaspora through Nick Hartanto’s Atrophy. In conjunction with the screenings, we have also created a zine celebrating the legacy of Indonesian horror through the voices of Indonesian diaspora in New York.
